Yellowstone and week 28

Kerry and I had our last hurrah prior to Maeve coming into this world in July. Neither of us have ever been to Yellowstone National Park and I am not too big yet to be doing hikes (though sadly I didn't get to white water raft or horseback ride :( Thank god for Kerry; without him there distracting me with other cool sights, I probably would have attempted both activities…not smart). We did the park in three days, which was perfect. The second night we got a cabin down by Old Faithful in the park which was pretty neat. We did a lot of hiking, walking, picnicing, and safariing and saw a ton of animals, views and waterfalls. We will be back with the kids someday, but still may avoid camping in the park as we did this time; Im too scared of the grizzlies we saw!
First stop; Mammoth Springs. There were plenty of Elk hanging out here every day, and since this is right near the north entrance where we came in and out, we saw a ton of them.

Guysers by Old Faithful, and Old Faithful itself
We hiked up to a viewpoint to get the best view of Old Faithful blowing.

Dinner at the Lake Hotel, next to Yellowstone Lake.
Listening to the String Quartet in the Lake hotel after a great day of hiking and sight seeing.

Week 28
Our Cabin at Yellowstone Lake near Old Faithful. No tents, but no bears either :)
The Lake Hotel - definately haunted.

Our safari to look for animals. We saw two grizzlies, one moose, a 200 obstinancy of Bison, and some prong horns

That brown spot is a bear, which was about 50 yards from us, foraging for food
Bison appear like cows; docile and slow. They are actually pretty crazy and have been known to gourd people and can run 35 miles per hour. They only live 12-16 years!

Dinner in Bozeman, MT the first night

The Continental Divide; the United States is divided by rivers. Mississippi, and Yellowstone river contribute to that.
Yellowstone canyon and waterfall - 350 foot drop. Thank god Maeve is safely incased in my uterus!

You'll notice Kerrys foot wedged under the fencing…he did this each time he got near the edge. He is as scared of heights as I am, which is great because I cant IMAGINE how to manage our brood of four at a sight like this. At least I wont be the only one freaking out!!!

Some more active guysers and springs

Our big hike up bunyen peak

Well deserved picnic after a four hour hike up one of the biggest peaks in Yellowstone National Park
Another waterfall hike

Goodbye!

  1. Looks like a wonderful vacation!! So glad you guys had a chance to relax and enjoy some gorgeous scenery. I love the comments on heights and kids:) The last carnival ride I ever took (other than the merry-go-round) was a ferris wheel with you when you were 2. I used to love the ferris wheel and that and the merry-go-round were the only ones I could do that didn't make me sick. I was excited to take you on it. Then we started going up and up and up....I saw how little you were and how big the spaces were between all the bars, and I was terrified. Apparently it showed on my face because the operator paused the ride when we were at the bottom and asked if we wanted to get off. Shortest ferris wheel ride ever. I was so grateful!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Ug that sounds awful mom! I have a feeling my fear of heights is going to extrapolate to my kids something terrible, I am so glad I can share that with Kerry so HE can be the "come one DAAAADDDDDDDD" and I can just keep my mouth shut :)
